Recipe Review- Jamie Oliver Messy Meatball Buns

Lately my husband and I have tried to be on a tighter budget to save money. Just like anybody else’s dream we hope to soon save up for a house. So what is one way to save money? Be more careful with how much you spend on groceries!

Now when you tell a foodie like me to do this, it can be very difficult instructions to follow. The world is full of opportunities with different recipes to try. It can be excruciating to restrain myself from creating culinary masterpieces that require several expensive ingredients. Alas, it must be done.

I was brainstorming to come up with ideas for continuing to cook unique and delicious recipes without breaking the bank. Then I thought of a brilliant idea. I absolutely LOVE Jamie Oliver’s recipes. I have many of his cook books and hope to one day collect them all. I knew I wanted to write recipe reviews on this blog site (inspired by the movie Julie and Julia) so I decided what better way to save money and review recipes than by starting with Jamie’s 5 Ingredient cookbook?!

First recipe review: Messy Meatball Buns. Cue the drool….

A recipe so simple yet so scrumptious. I highly recommend for others to try it. Now I definitely want to be careful as I write these types of blogs to avoid plagiarism. Therefore, I will simply describe the flavours of only some ingredients and how much I enjoyed following the recipe.

One reason why this recipe appealed to me so much was because it has pesto! I absolutely loooovve pesto. I love the garlicy and herbaceous flavours that it adds to a dish. I personally feel that pesto can turn so many meals into amazing, succulent creations.

Also, I would say this is a great recipe for when you are pressed for time yet still want to eat something packed full of flavour. And what other flavours were tantalizing the taste buds you might ask? Well there is definitely a creaminess from the cheese, pared with a well-balanced acidity from tomatoes. This is a beautifully comforting combination that warms your soul.

Now the buns I used were small whole wheat buns because they were on sale at my local grocery store. These buns did not work the greatest but the meal was still quite wonderful. However, I would recommend to make sure you have decent sized buns that will easily fit multiple meatballs. I was lucky if I could fit one meatball on my bun and later had to resort to eating with a fork and knife due to clumsiness.

In summary, I highly recommend trying this recipe out. Whether you own the cookbook, use the recipe on Jamie’s website or watch this quick video I found on Jamie’s YouTube channel, either way it is a great one to learn and try at home. Of course my photos aren’t as gorgeous as the ones in the book, but hey, the word “messy” is in the title, so I am going to roll with it.

Enjoy!
